July 24, 2012 - As of today 531 faculty have renewed their membership using the FA’s new membership management system. That represents 47% of faculty who were members in 2011-2012. “Were pleased that so many have already renewed their membership even though the new academic year hasn’t started,” said Janice Reilly, chair of the Membership Committee. “We’ll have a big push in August as folks who may have been gone over the summer come back to work.”
June 12, 2012 - FEC voted at today’s meeting to clarify the the terms of the membership year as stated in the FEC Constitution. It was decided to make the membership year parallel to the FA fiscal year which begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 annually. It was also decided to end all payroll deduction through the MCCCD HR Office on the last pay cycle of December, 2012. This will allow more time to migrate any FA members who have missed the migration drive over the Spring and Summer so as not to lose there benefits.
February 28, 2012 - Payroll deduction for FA dues will be discontinued beginning July 1, 2012. At today’s meeting, the Faculty Executive Council voted to discontinue payroll deduction for its membership dues. The decision was propelled by the anti-union legislation introduced in the Arizona State Legislature. “Even if the current bills do not pass this session, we’ve learned our lesson,” said Eddie Genna, FA President. The revenue of the FA comes from its members’ dues, and the vast majority use payroll deduction to pay. Cutting off payroll deduction in the middle of the fiscal year would paralyze the organization.
The FEC decided to circumvent the threat by moving all membership payment to a secure on-line process that is part of the new FA website that is being rolled out in April. “It doesn’t matter if they pass it this year, or bring it back next year, we won’t be affected by this legislative maneuver,” concluded Genna. 2012 Academic
